Downing
What's this guys problem with West Ham seems to have a big chip on his shoulder - almost every day the same news story that he is really happy to be away from West Ham and how Bilic didn't convince him to stay and is glad to drop down to the Championship as West ham wont go above 10th place so nothing to stay and play for!

He has of course every right to have an opinion.but it does appear to be flavored with more bad feeling than anything else.

Downing admits Middlesbrough was always going to be his chosen destination after speaking to Boro chairman Steve Gibson and manager Aitor Karanka.

“I’d spoken to the chairman and Aitor and they had good plans here and were looking to strengthen the team,” said Downing, who said he would rather be in a promotion-chasing Championship side than a mid-table or struggling Premier side.

“He wanted me to be part of that playing as a number 10 or as a wide man.

“For me, it was a very easy decision to make.

“The chairman asked if I was up for it and I said ‘if you can make the deal happen and you get me out of West Ham then I’m happy to come back’.

So, he was tapped up then? Get me out of here, because I don't feel the love? Or maybe we forgot his birthday cake?

I don't have a problem with him leaving, we got decent money for him at his age, plus we are far stronger in that position now we've unloaded him. He comes across as a bitter cunt, though - good riddance, fucking cowardly Northern monkey.

Re: Downing
Sounds like completely standard stuff a player says when they join a new club, hardly newsworthy.

Re: Downing
I imagine the "not convincing him to stay" talk went along these lines

SD - So where do you see me playing next season

SB - Well we've signed a vastly superior player in your position but you may get a game in the Carling Cup or when Payet is out injured

Coward wouldn't get into our team.

Re: Downing
As I understood it he was approached as a 31yo with a 5 year deal at £70k a week by his home town club.
And cried and wheedled until we allowed him to leave for what is a ludicrously generous deal for him.

Disappointing that he wants to criticise us for doing good by him at his request.
I understand our fee received goes to £7m if they are promoted.

Given our last day recruiting he wouldn't get in our side now.

Re: Downing
A bloke I work with is a big Boro around the same age and lived up there and hung around in the same circles.

He said Downing was superb for Boro especially during the euro games, but was a coke head in his early days and let himself down a lot.

He reckons the people he's spoken to told him Downing returning say he wants to be a LEGEND around Boro and is right up his own arse so didn't surprise him at all that he wanted to come back and lap it all up locally.

He said he liked him as a player but thinks he's a cock as a person.

Re: Downing
So he'd prefer to be going to play in places like Rotherham, Preston and Huddersfield than the prem grounds of England?

Yeah right.

Re: Downing
It's the sort of stuff players say about their new club. How they wanted to go back and weren't really loved at WH yada, yada, yada...

31 years old and 5 years contract at £70k pw were the reasons he wanted to home though...

I was happy for him to leave from a football point of view.
